Autumn Palette Grass Collection
€ 15,95 incl. VAT
Plant combinations in which ornamental grasses have also been used are indispensable for the natural effects that are so characteristic of the gardens of Piet Oudolf.
Dreamlike landscapes with flowers caught within a delicate web of grasses, or dynamic combinations with characteristic perennials are among the possibilities. The grasses in this collection can be counted among the latter category. They are characterized as solitary grasses that can be planted separately from their surroundings in one way or another. In order to justify a treatment, a plant must have something special. And the plants in this collection have it all.

Briza media ‘Limouzi’
Briza media, commonly called common quaking grass, is a rhizomatous, creeping, warm season ornamental grass which features a clump of narrow, erect, green leaves (1/4 to 1/2″ wide) typically growing 12 to 15″ tall. Tiny, greenish flowers appear in spring in loose, airy panicles atop stems rising well above the foliage clump to 24-36″ tall. Flowers give way to flattened hop-like, purplish-maturing-to-tan seed heads which dangle on thread-like stems and quiver in the slightest breeze, thus giving rise to the common name.
Molinia caerulea ‘Moorhexe’
This ‘Dwarf Moor Grass’ is a medium-sized grass which forms a low clump of dark-green leaves, bearing narrow bronze-purple spikes in mid-summer. Most effective as an accent among low plants, or an outcrop in the rock garden. Clumps may be easily divided in early spring.
Panicum virgatum ‘Heavy Metal’
Panicum virgatum ‘Heavy Metal’ is a favorite switchgrass, well-loved for its dramatic, metallic blue foliage and for its strong upright habit that remains standing straight and tall. Pink-tinted, airy blooms appear in July, highlighting the color of its blue leaves. This blue switchgrass serves as a colorful backdrop to other grasses and perennials, looks stunning in masses, and provides a focal point when used as a specimen. A cultivar of native Panicum virgatum, it is an easy choice for meadows and naturalized areas as it not picky about soil and is very drought tolerant. Panicum virgatum ‘Heavy Metal’ does best in full sun; refrain from over fertilizing. It is one of the oldest and most well-known blue cultivars of Panicum.
