Piet and Anja Oudolf’s garden at Hummelo has become something of a pilgrimage destination for landscape designers and architects from across the world. The nursery garden allows Oudolf to experiment with plants and trial newly selected plants and plant combinations that he goes on to use in his world famous projects such as The High Line in New York City and the Oudolf Field at the Hauser & Wirth Gallery in Somerset, UK. This book describes Piet Oudolf’s journey from nurseryman to world-famous landscape designer from the viewpoint of the garden he has built with his wife Anja.
Oudolf | Hummelo was written in collaboration with Noel Kingsbury, a UK-based journalist and garden designer. He regularly gives lectures and workshops on his natural and sustainable approach to garden design and planting. He has been a friend of Piet and Anja Oudolf for more than 20 years. This is the fifth book they have written together.
“You look at planting and it goes deeper than what you see. It’s in our genes – nature or the desire for nature. A garden touches on a human need. You accept death. Plants should not be removed if they still look good. Brown is finally a color. ”
Piet Oudolf in The New York Times
“Piet Oudolf make gardens as fragile flower paintings. ”
“Throughout the world the work of Piet Oudolf is a source of inspiration. His style is known as revolutionary because of its unusual look at gardening.”
“I see plants as stage characters, like my actors, that can play a different role in each new garden.”
